This is an attractive and very early production cavalry officers saber. This sword has a slightly curved 34 1/2 inch long blade that still retains some of the ornate etching from the factory but it is quite light. The blade is etched with panoplies and laurels framing an inscription on one side "Premier Regiment de Chasseurs a Cheval" which lets us know that it was for the 1st Regiment. The reverse of the blade is faintly etched "Armee Belge". On the base of the front of the blade it has the crown stamp with the "31" numbers which was the way of dating the 1833 production date of the sword. The brass of the handguard has a nice ancient look and as you can see it has the floral designs on 3 of the 4 branches as well as on the top of the handguard. These floral designs let us know that it was intended for an officer instead of an enlisted man. The pommel cap of the swordhas the matching floral patterns. The handle of the sword still retains the original wooden core as well as a small section of the original sharkskin grip. The rest of the sharkskin cover has been lost to the ages. The sword is accompanied by a very nice original metal scabbard. The scabbard has both of the mounts intact as well as the rings, throat and drag. This is a attractive early production officers sword with an etched blade from Belgium.
