This is an original Non-Excavated coat size button for the state of Virginia. On the face is the classic Virginia state seal in the center with "VIRGINIA” at the top and "SIC SEMPER TYRANNIS”. This is the motto of Virginia which translates to "THUS UNTO TYRANTS”. The button has a fine look with some of the original gold wash remaining. The original back and shank is present with the nice, clear Civil War backmark of "CANFIELD BRO. & CO. / BALTIMORE" between the two rows of dots. This particular backmark is one of the more desirable backmarks you can find on this pattern of button. It has always been a favorite with collectors because of the Maryland backmark. One of the coats that Robert E. Lee wore is reported to have this pattern of backmark on the buttons. This is the staff officer’s version and this style is listed as VA20 in Albert’s button book and VA261A1 in Tice’s button book. This is a beautiful looking Civil War Virginia state seal with a desirable backmark. We got a goodbye on this button thought we were past the long. A great button for a great price.
