This is an original military hatplate for the Massachusetts Militia that would date from about 1840. It is the stamped tin plate that went on the front of the military hat for decoration. These tin style hat plates are tougher to find that the standard silver and copper ones. Being made of a softer metal fewer of these survived over the years. The face of the plate has a beautiful look and you can still see traces of the original finish down in the protected areas. As you can see this is a beautiful looking plate with a thick rich patina. The front of the plate has the famous Massachusetts Indian on the front with the arm & sword at the top and across the bottom reads "MASSACHUSETTS MILITIA”. On the back of the plate it still retains original tin plume holder. When the attachment loops came off of the back, the soldier stitched the plate onto the hat. The overall size of the plate measures 4.25 inches by 3.25 inches. This is a fine original and beautifully designed Massachusetts hat plate for your collection.
