This is a beautiful excavated eagle breastplate from the Civil War. This is the circular plate that would have adorned the shoulder strap to a Civil War cartridge box. It has the bold union eagle on the front of the plate. In one talon she holds the arrows of war and in the other talon is the branch of peace. On the back of the plate it has a nice amount of the lead remaining as well as the majority of both of the iron attachment loops. This is a very pretty excavated Civil War era U.S. cartridge box breastplate. What makes this one special is that you can clearly see the original maker’s mark stamping in the lead filled back. You can see the mark of "E. GAYLORD" that was the mark of Emerson Gaylord of Chicopee, Massachusetts. The verbal history that accompanied this plate is that it was found decades ago in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania in the area of Culp's Hill. This is an excellent original excavated Civil War eagle breastplate and you have the maker's mark in addition to the great plate.
