This is a beautiful original military hatplate from the 1st half of the 1800’s. It is the stamped brass plate that went on the front of the military hat for decoration. This one is of the pattern like the illustration of figure 631 in the wonderful new headgear insignia book by Campbell & O’Donnell entitled "American Military Headgear Insignia”. This one has a gorgeous look and even has both of the original attachment loops intact on the reverse. It also has the circular piece of tin that was used to hold the pompon for the hat. The face of the plate has the beautiful Union eagle in the center with the "E Pluribus Unum” banner above her. Below the eagle it has the stand of arms that include cannon, rifles and sabers. If you notice there is still trace amounts of the original factory silver remaining down in the protected areas. The silver lets us know it was designed for Infantry use. This is a beautiful piece to add to your collection.
