This is a beautifully designed Civil War cadet button. This is the one listed as SU272 in Albert’s button book and as NC277Am4 in Tice’s book. It is the 19mm coat size button for the North Carolina Military Institute that was located in Charlotte, North Carolina. The school was found by a man that would later become a Confederate general, D.H. Hill. He established the school in 1859 and some of the cadets were among the first Confederate volunteers. Some of the cadets manned cannon at the first major battle of the War, Big Bethel, Virginia in June of 1861. The face of the button has the school name as well as the famous North Carolina "Beehive" in the center of the button. It has the lined background. This one is in beautiful non-excavated condition with traces of the original gold gilding remaining on the face. On the back of the button it has the original back and shank intact. It has the correct Scovill of Waterbury, Connecticut backmark. This is a great looking Confederate used North Carolina Military Institute cadet button.
