Wow! When was the last time you saw one of these jewels offered? It is one of the toughest to find of all of the variations of Confederate staff officer’s buttons. It is the version listed as figure CS20 in Albert’s button book and CS251a1 in Tice’s button book. It is the large 25mm coat button that has the droop wing style eagle on the face of the button with the stars around the edge. This one is in superb shape with traces of the original gold gilding present on the button’s face in the protected areas. It still has fine detail as you can see. These buttons were made with the high style dome face that makes it look like a three piece button as is mentioned in the button book. The original back and shank are present with more of the gold gilding remaining down in the channeled back. You will have to look for quite a while to find another example of this scarce Confederate staff button.
