This is a nice authentic excavated original Civil War boxplate from a soldier’s cartridge box. This is the plate that went on the outer flap not only for decoration but to help keep the flap closed. It has the crystal clear " US” letters on the front with a very pleasing grayish patina all over. Both of the two original iron loops are still intact on the back and it has a fine amount of the original lead. The soldier must have held the plate on the box with the iron wire that is still attached. The verbal history that accompanied this plate is that it was recovered from Henrico County, Virginia which is the Richmond area. It is a fine displaying excavated piece of Civil War history!
