This is a scarce non-excavated Civil War button! It is the coat size staff officer uniform button for the state of Alabama. This is the pattern listed as AB1A2 in Albert’s button book and as AB200A1 in Tice’s button book. On the face of the button it has the famous Map on Tree great seal of the state of Alabama. This one has a great look with a fine amount of the original gold gilding down in the recesses which makes the map shows up very well. There are no pushes or restorations at all on this button. On the back of the button it has the original back and shank intact. Most of the time one or the other is missing but this one has them both. The back of the button has the desirable "SUPERFIN / PARIS”marking. These buttons were manufactured by Scovills of Waterbury, Connecticut and they used this backmark so they could sell them to the Southern state before the Civil War broke out. This is a beautiful and complete state seal button from Alabama that any collector would appreciate.
