This is a spectacular non-excavated Civil War uniform button for the state of Arkansas. These are one of the most coveted of all Civil War uniform buttons. This is the classic Civil War style that has the Arkansas state seal type goddess of liberty image in the center and around the edge it reads "CADET" on a ribbon above. Below the image it has the lettering of "A.M.I." and around the edge reads "OUR GOD, OUR COUNTRY & OUR HONOR". This was the bold motto of the Arkansas Military Institute. The book states that this institution was organized in 1850. At the outbreak of the Civil War, the school closed and the students formed company. I of the 3rd Arkansas Confederate Infantry. The face of the button has a great look with a beautiful amount of the original gold gilding remaining intact. The original back is present on the back and it has the correct Civil War era Steele & Johnson Company maker’s mark for the firm of W.H.Horstmann of Philadelphia. The button has the original shank nicely intact on the reverse. This is the style listed as figure SU 24 in Albert’s button book and AK280a1 in Tice’s button book. This is great looking button by anyone’s standards.
