This is a beautiful button from the state of New York. This is the version listed as figure NY39 in Albert's button book and is not listed in Tice's button book. These buttons were likely made just after the Civil War. It is the coat size button used by the elite 7th Militia Regiment of New York City." The face of the button has a beautiful "Columbia" style New York flying eagle with a shield coming from her beak. Below her it has the "EXCELSIOR” motto in the banner. Around the edge of the button it reads "7th REGIMENT NATIONAL GUARD". On the back of the button it has the correct backmark of the D. Evans Company of Attleboro, Massachusetts. This is a beautiful non-excavated button even though it wasn't made during the war.
