This is one of the most elusive of all Civil War Georgia state seal buttons. This is the version listed as GA15av in Alberts button book and as GA239As1 in Tice's button book. He notes that these buttons "Because of their rarity, most collectors are not even aware of their existence." He states that the farm of Steele & Johnson manufactured these buttons approximately in 1860. They were manufactured for they New York firm of Horstmann and Company. It has their retailers marking on the reverse of the button. This is the 14.5 mm cuffs size version. This three-piece button has the beautiful Georgia state seal on the front with a very high dome to the button. This one has superb goal gilding from the factory that makes the detail stand out beautifully. On the back of the button it has the original back in shank intact.
