This is a nice original saber style bayonet. These were designed so they could be used on the end of the gun as a bayonet or by hand as a saber. This is the version that is illustrated at the bottom of page 117 of Paul Kiesling's Bayonets of the World book. He states that it is a Danish saber bayonet used on the model 1867 Remington rolling block rifle. This one has the full-length 22 1/2 inch blade length. At the base of the back of the blade, it has the Solingen, Germany maker's Mark of the firm of EBF Weyersberg. It has the unit marking on the cross guard as well as the serial number on the other side of the cross guard. The handle of the sword bayonet is made of pressed leather. The handle still retains the original locking ring that is fully functional. This is a very attractive early saber bayonet.
