Here is a bayonet that you seldom see offered for sale. This is the version that is illustrated as figure B99 in the American socket bayonets and scabbard book by Robert Reilly. He states that "This variation is seldom encounter today, and was probably produced in very limited numbers." He adds that they believe these were produced by the firm of Ridgeway and Rufe of Philadelphia. The blade of the bayonet looks just like the standard Civil War Springfield style bayonet. The socket is completely different. The back of the bayonet is made like the standard gun for the Prussian musket. These early guns were imported at the outbreak of the American Civil War in an effort to provide all of the new recruits with weapons quickly. Instead of having a locking ring, these bayonets clipped into place using a stud on the bottom side of the barrel. This bayonet is full-length and complete that does have the salt and pepper pitting as you can see in the images. At the base of the blade you can still see the remnants of the "US" stamping. This one isn't in the greatest condition but ask yourself when you saw the last one offered for sale?ever completely different.
