This is the triangular shoulder patch that was worn by a member of the 49th Armored division. The patch book states that they served from June of 1948 until January 1968. They got their nickname "Lone Star" because they were originally organized in Houston from the Texas National Guard. The patch itself is the triangular design with the Red Yellow and Blue background which stands for the branches that formed the armored divisions, Infantry, Cavalry and Artillery. Int he center it has the tank tread and gun and the lighting flash. It measures 3-1/2 by 3-1/4ths inches in overall size.
